There are some landscapes that simply refuse to be contained. While most of my work is created in my signature square format, I recently found myself working on a piece where the horizon felt so vast and the coastline so expansive that I had to “break my own rules.” This was the inspiration behind my very first large A2 (420mm x 594mm) landscape print:
Seton Sands.
The story of this print actually began as a personal mission. I wanted to create a meaningful Mother’s Day gift for my mother-in-law, who grew up in Port Seton (pronounced Seeton), on the East Lothian coast which is a wee village just down the road from the beach. For her, Seton Sands is not just a beach; it is a place filled with childhood memories and a deep sense of home. She now lives in Dundee, close to us so it was nice to give her a reminder of where she grew up.
Many holidaymakers will also be familiar with this wonderful beach as it’s just across the road from a popular holiday park.
Seton Sands has a very specific atmosphere. It feels open and bright, with a light that seems to stretch on forever toward the Firth of Forth. In this piece, I focused on the gentle textures of the shoreline and the soft, coastal colours that make this part of the world so calming.
I wanted the final artwork to be a statement piece for her wall. At A2 size, the print has a real presence in a room, acting like a window back to those nostalgic beach walks and family days out. Seeing her reaction to the print made me realise that many other people likely share that same emotional connection to this stretch of coastline.
If you have a large space to fill, such as above a mantelpiece or a sofa, a traditional landscape ratio can often provide the perfect visual balance. While my square prints are wonderful for gallery walls and smaller nooks, the A2 Seton Sands print is designed for those wider spaces that need a larger focal point.
One of the questions I often get asked is about framing. Because A2 is a standard size, it is actually very easy to find beautiful, affordable frames in high-street shops like Asda, The Range or IKEA. This means you can have a large-scale piece of Scottish landscape art ready to hang without the need for bespoke framing.
