Broughty Ferry Beach Artwork

The Print That Started It All: Broughty Ferry Beach, Dundee

There is a specific quality to the light on the Tay that you only really understand if you have lived near it. It is rarely a simple blue; instead, it has those famous silvery reflections that shift and shimmer depending on the wind. It was that specific, bright light that stayed with me even when I moved miles away to North Lanarkshire.

While I loved exploring the West Coast Lochs & Hills near Glasgow, nothing quite matched the light and sunny weather of the East.

Living near Glasgow, surrounded by the beautiful but very different landscape of the central belt, I found myself craving a “piece of home” for my walls. I wanted the horizon, the salt air, and that unique east coast sunshine. This is actually what led to the very first print I ever created: Broughty Ferry Beach.

A Happy Memory of Sea Air & Sunshine

The beach has been my happy place ever since I was wee. It reminds me of fresh air and family days out for picnics on the coast.  Every time I look at this print, I don’t just see an image of a beach; I see a very specific afternoon I spent with my lovely Mum, years ago, a long time before I started turning my photos into artwork.

I was visiting my parents in Dundee from living in Yorkshire and my Mum and I decided to head down to the Ferry for a coffee, which we loved to do. It was one of those classic Scottish summer days where the sun was brilliant, the sky was huge, and the wind was fresh and invigorating. After coffee, we took a wee walk along the beach and spent the afternoon laughing at our wind-swept hair and taking daft photos.

A Very Personal Print

My Mum is no longer with us now, which makes this artwork even more precious to me. It is a snapshot of the fun we had and the simple joy of an afternoon at the beach. When I eventually sat down to create the artwork, I was not just trying to copy a photograph. I was trying to bottle that feeling of home so I could have it no matter where I lived.  If you look closely enough you may also notice that there’s a wee cat sat on one of the posts, looking out to sea. This is Tinker who was a lovely wee cat and I wanted to remember her in my artwork too.
